Teachers – Communicate With Assertiveness

Posted by admin On August - 7 - 2011

Article by Jennifer Dobson

As an educator, you will likely need to hone your communication skills in order to effectively communicate with your students as well as other educators, administrators, and parents during the course of your career. Most people are not “born communicators”, but rather learn their communications skills from their environment, upbringing, and of course, through studying communication and practicing various communications techniques. Assertive communication is ideal for teachers and educators because it allows them to convey their thoughts in a respectful manner while listening to the thoughts and opinions of others.Assertive communication is not to be confused with aggressive communication which is a forceful communications style that is mainly used to get one’s way or to “divide and conquer”. Are you an assertive communicator? Do you bring the style of communication to the classroom, or to the parent conference, that conveys your thoughts in an assertive, yet understanding manner? Let’s look at some way that you can improve your assertiveness when communicating with students, teachers, and others.Techniques for Enhancing Assertive Communication

Observe other assertive communicators. Chances are that there are many of your peers who have developed an assertive communication style. Their requests, ideas, and thoughts are conveyed to their “audience” with respect, and they listen attentively to other people’s ideas and responses. Ask these great communicators what they do in order to prepare for an event, like a conference with parents or an important meeting. Pay attention to the nonverbal cues that they give off when communicating too and mimic this body language in your own communication style, including ways that they “hold their body”, and facial expressions that they employ.Watch your tone and your choice of words. Speaking neither too quickly or too slowly are hallmarks of assertive communicators. You want your speech to be perfectly executed so that you seem certain of what you are saying – if you speak too fast, you will come across as a “know it all” or if you speak too slowly, people may get the idea that you are improvising as you go along.Think before you speak, and prepare in advance when you know you will be speaking in a situation that requires assertiveness. Practice out loud a few times for very important conversations. Use a tape recorder or practice before a mirror.Be clear about what the main idea or request is that you want to get across when communicating assertively. State what you want. Be precise about your expectations. Let the other person know the specific task you are looking to accomplish.Listen. The very most important key element in any form of communication is listening. Becoming an effective listener is cornerstone to becoming an assertive communicator. You talk, you listen, even if you do not agree with or accept what the other person is saying. Listening is respectful and allows you to understand where the other party is coming from. You will come across various situations during the course of performing your duties as a teacher or educator that require assertive communication. Practicing your skills in assertiveness will make you a more effective communicator.

Communication skills for the average guy

Posted by admin On August - 7 - 2011

Most say that men and women are, in fact, different. Apart from the outward aspects of the different genders that are obvious, we are separate in a few other characteristics also. The greatest of these is communication styles. It has become cliché to think that men and women talk differently, but it is so. How many times have women heard something that was not actually said. Or why is it that a man can’t ask for directions? The purpose of this article is not to answer these puzzlers, but to give men some direction in the art of effective communication.

Communication involves the art of listening. I have heard it oft said that we were given two ears and one mouth for a reason. Namely that we should talk only half as much as we listen. Also hearing and listening are not the same thing. We can hear a bird call, the wind in the trees or a car horn, but we listen to another’s words. We can easily just hear the drone of the words, but seeking to comprehend what is being said by another is listening.

A close brother to listening is silence. Some find it hard to believe that silence is a skill, but try not to fill a lull during conversation. It is a very difficult project, and something that you have to train yourself to do, not to speak when there is silence. It is also hard not to talk when you have something to say. As soon as you have something to say you stop listening. Therefore, the art of silence is an essential communication skill. It is akin to listening, in that you don’t attempt to interrupt what is being said you just take it in and then respond. Basically, wait your turn. The conversation will come back around to you.

If someone truly wants to communicate they will ask open ended questions. These are questions that cannot be answered with just a yes or no response. They have to be countered with a longer answer that can keep the conversation going. These questions disseminate more information and, therefore, make the total conversation shorter also.

Another technique used in communication is summarization. Trying to summarize what was just said, and understanding the full meaning can lead to less heartache in the future. When it comes back around that you were not listening because of some action you can remind the other person of their clarification.

Communication is about understanding. You first have to really want to understand, or it is easy to tune out. Keep eye contact with the other party. Block out what is going on around you. Turn off the game, or the radio. Eliminate distractions. Communication is also about wanting to feel the emotion of the other’s speech and empathize with it.

These few hints, as to this most elusive of arts, won’t solve all communication woes. They will, most likely, mean fewer arguments and more harmony.

Nonverbal Communication

It is a well known myth that women are difficult to read by men and vice versa. What someone is saying may not be accurate, and therefore, not give one a true idea what is actually being said. There are many articles written, and there have been many studies conducted, on the speaking and communication differences between men and women. Therefore this article won’t contain any further words about how someone speaks. This informative piece of wisdom is here to help you decipher what is actually going on inside someone’s head by seeing what there body is telling you.

Lying is difficult to detect. Someone who is practiced can fake the truth signals that you would normally give. Wide open eyes usually mean that someone is telling the truth because it indicates surprise, and also that they are trying to see more clearly. If someone tries to falsify this signal it generally looks false, and is therefore, easily detectable. The classic manor in which to distinguish a lie is to see if someone is sweating. Sweating denotes nervousness. If the person wipes their hands against their pants, their palms are probably sweating and they could be lying. Another classic is to watch the eyes. Which direction do they move? The right hemisphere of the brain houses the creative center. If a person’s eyes stray up and to the right they are probably trying to create something (i.e., a lie.) If the person’s eyes don’t move it doesn’t indicate truth, but it is a better possibility. Any of the symptoms of nervousness (shallow/rapid breathing, darting eyes) can also be indicators of a lie.

How do you tell if someone is actually paying attention to what you are saying? Eye contact is the best way. If they keep their eyes on you sporadically then their mind is probably wandering. Try to make sure that they look at you when you are talking. Another trick is to ask a question related to the topic. If they can recount what you said, they were probably paying attention. An active listener keeps eye contact, makes gestures, such as head nods, that indicate interest, and uses filler words. Filler words are ones that show interest such as good, yes, etc. The engaged listener will also, usually, stop and ask clarification to points that you have made.

How can you make your partner feel loved and appreciated without words? We are designed to need touch. There is nothing that conveys interest and affection more than contact. This doesn’t have to be something major. A slight brushing touch of the fingers can mean a lot. Another gesture that can express interest is doing something that is unexpected, such as washing the dishes, taking out the trash, or making dinner. These may seem like chores, but they can mean that you care about the other person enough to make their life easier. Also, watch how they react when you enter a room. Stopping a conversation with someone else or smiling at you translates to genuine affection.

Rise by a wide margin with the price of the copper cable, and optic fibre optical cable and price of the optical transcreceiving module are reduced progressively, been dwelling upon with great relish in industry ” Only enter copper and retreat ” Paces but also day by day accelerate. Meanwhile, drove the relevant enterprises on industry chains such as all communicating device manufacturer and optic fibre optical cable manufacturer, etc. to enter the new round of peak period that develop at full speed. And in this industry, the most noticeable one is the communication of beacon.

Make oneself too remarkable at the end of the year in communication of beacon

From November to December, in a short period of two months, the communication stock price of the beacon advances triumphantly all the way, rise from 11.9 to the high price of about 20 yuan, break through the culmination many times, and a plurality of organizations follow up one after another. Now, the stock price Yang Zhong in continuation yet of communication of beacon.

Beautiful achievement at the the intersection of wealth and newspaper only on one hand, in fact, beacon movements are frequent this year such as communication. In May of this year, the communication of beacon wins a bid of FTTH commercial project of China’s maximum at one blow – -The oil field FTTH project of Qinghai, ten thousands of lines of provision of equipment, Line 17000 of the cable; In August, 16 provinces EPON held in China Telecom for the first time are while collecting and adopting, the communication of beacon succeeds in entering 14 provinces, gain happily and employ the province, purchase one pair of first good results of total amount; In November, the communication of beacon is listed ” annual China’s optical communication has synthesized competitiveness enterprises 10 most strong ” in glory especially Three products group (optical transmission apparatus, optic fibre optical cable, optical device) The first of the list.

The good achievement has stimulated confidence and investment desire that investors communicate to the beacon, many organizations paid close attention to the communication of beacon even more this year, the communication of beacon became the stock of star who let people be unable to ignore at the end of the year too. The securities analyst of the people’s livelihood thinks especially, second market price that the communication of beacon develops is underestimated, the price will rise to more than 30 yuan in the future.

” only enter copper and retreat ” Initiate industry’s effect

Though FTTH (fiber to the home) of China Has just started, but the space of market is enormous. Two major operators of demand promotion China of huge market: China Telecom and China Netcom strengthened FTTH paces, was accelerating ” only enter copper and retreat ” a few days ago Process. December 11, China Telecom Yang Jie Vice President session face the intersection of Hubei and Company in person, every the intersection of province and urban area in charge of Vice President and network development to look travel-stained from get to the intersection of river and the intersection of city and Wuhan all over China too in department head, the ones that join the group of China Telecom ” Only enter copper and retreat ” Working forum, canvass and have something to do to accelerate ” only enter copper and retreat ” Matters of the process.

Communicate with beacon, the intersection of the Changjiang River and science and technology, etc. become beneficiaries for representatives’ mere communicating device enterprises and optical cable enterprises of optic fibre represented by prosperous photoelectricity, culmination science and technology,etc.. Outstanding one of China optical communication market among them, until time transmit the intersection of products and complete, the intersection of EPON and the intersection of beacon and communication of technology perfection, become the operator develop maximum beneficiary of FTTH perhaps.

Change Management Communications Planning

Posted by admin On August - 6 - 2011

Communications are an integral part of the change management process. A good communications plan will therefore address many issues associated with change management including but not limited to the following:

Impact – If project will produce/effect significant change within an organization particularly concerning changes to organizational procedure and operating practices.

Evaluate Resistance – Plan for resistance to the changes wrought by the project particularly if restructuring of the organization (merging departments etc.) is involved. Balance this against how agile the organization is in handling change.

Communication – Communications are a very crucial part of any change process. In project management this is an even weightier element since projects are basically about delivering change. It is nigh on impossible to have a project successfully deliver the change without adequate communications. The topic of scope change and the specifics of communications related to this element are to use a scope management term beyond the scope of this paper.

Human Relations – Consider factors such as: Training, HR Counseling, Salary Negotiations, User Participation and Involvement. Many is the time that one becomes so deeply engrossed in what one is doing that it becomes difficult to see the forest for the trees. A project manager is required to do both.

Communication Mechanisms – Some of the tools that can be employed to foster communications within a project or business may include communications events such as regularly scheduled meetings, reports, project boards, newsletters, e-mail etc.

Media Distribution Methodologies – The two major ways in which you may disseminate information differ in one critical aspect and that is the amount of onus placed upon your intended recipient of the information (your target audience). These are known as the push method and the pull method and their usage indicators are as follows:

Push – Information is pushed to the intended target audience such as memos, email, presentations etc. all of which may be used at various times in most situations. Never rule out combining methods and most certainly do not forget the spoken word. It may be appropriate to go on down and tell them in person. Your presence will add weight to your words.

Pull – Information is made available but they have to go find it e.g. – Web Sites and posting or bulletin boards are but two of the most commonly utilized pull mechanisms. The pull method is most appropriate for information dissemination involving minor stakeholders or for details that you do not want to make public knowledge. For example you might send a short summary via E-mail to all and sundry, and have a detailed 50 page report available via secure intranet with the appropriate permissions to restrict it to only those whom you want to see.

Printed Media – Even in this digital electronic world of today printed communiqués and memos; including E-mails that are first printed before being read, are high on the list of communications that people actually read. People still place greater credence upon the printed format than they do on the electronic format. According to psychologists the reasons for this are many but the “seeing is believing” philosophy seems to be at the top of the list. Bearing this in mind here a couple of pointers that provide a good guide to the most appropriate uses of the printed communications format:

Printed Memo – This is a good method if the message is short. At least to inform those concerned that an electronic communication of importance and particular relevance to them is now available at and then provide the specifics of the location of and any other special requirements for obtaining the electronic material.

Print-Friendly E-mails – E-mails in a form that is “print-friendly” are also a good method as a high percentage of E-mails are actually printed then read as opposed to being read on screen.

How to improve your communication skills

Posted by admin On August - 5 - 2011

What is great communication skill between two people? Great communication skill is when you share information with other people without having them resent you or misunderstood you. If you’re a great communicator then you won’t have this problem but if you’re amateur then you can into some problems. Remember to use communication skills instead of saying anything that comes to mind. There is a saying that goes “mind what you say or else you’ll say anything that comes to mind.” We can make other people resent or misunderstood us if we are not careful about what we say. It’s easy to send mix messages and the recipients will misunderstood us.

Misunderstanding is very common and we want to avoid that as much as possible. If you observe it you will know that we misunderstand people intentions all the time. A person can be frowning because he’s tired but we think he doesn’t like us. This is not true. He’s just tire when he meets us but it doesn’t mean that he doesn’t like us. How about a person who is quiet and doesn’t want to talk to you when you’re sitting in a group? You think that he or she doesn’t like you but it’s just a fact that they’re quiet or they don’t talk unless you ask them too. There’re many people that fall under the quiet category and it doesn’t mean that they don’t like you. They’re just quiet. You should give people a chance to express themselves clearly to you before you assume anything about them. One of the way to better improve your communication skills is to avoid sending mix messages and make the receiver misunderstand you. You should avoid assuming people’s feelings until you hear it directly from them because misunderstanding is very common.

There are rules that you have to follow to acheive great communication skills. There are a number of topics and things that are better left reserved. You can say enough without having to bring the negative things in. For some people they tend to talk negatively no matter who they’re dealing with, this could mean that they have poor communication skills. There are people that have mental illness as well and they will say things that can make you shake your head. It’s your responsibility to talk to stable people. If you talk to an unstable person then they’re not responsible for your well being because they don’t know what they’re doing.

You want to say a lot of positive things so that people will not be angry with you. You want to avoid saying a lot of negative things that can get you bad consequences. You know what those things are and just don’t say it. For example, men do not tell women that they look big in their jeans. This will upset women. Women do not tell your man that they’re not good family provider. Nothing will make them more angry then telling them that they’re incompetent. You should know the right and the wrong things to say by now. We’re all capable individuals that do know what to say and what to not say but it’s just that most of the time we’re careless about it. Don’t be careless and people will no have problems with you. Great communication can avoid emotional turmoil, misunderstanding and resentments. Great communication skills allow other people to understand us more and to maintain positive relationships whether it be at home or at work.

Benefits of Mobile VOIP

Posted by admin On August - 5 - 2011

It seems that nobody ever goes anywhere anymore without their mobile phone.  Whether at work or play the mobile phone seems to be an extension of who we are.  One of the characteristics our colleagues and friends will use to describe us is by the type of mobile  phone we have – perhaps we are an iPhone user or a Droid user.  We use our smart phones for a multitude of purposes — to place and receive phone calls, read and answer email, check our Facebook status and send and receive text messages.

Up until now our cell phone and work desk phone have been separate – with each serving a unique and distinct purpose.  Our cell phone was for personal use – and when it was used for work purposes, minutes were needlessly eaten up from our personal mobile plan. Our work phone (desk phone), on the other hand, was for, well, work.  Up until now, the work phone was the only phone capable of displaying the company ID when making outbound calls.  The work phone also was the only phone capable of extension-to-extension dialing.

Technology is quickly changing, however.  Evolving technology has allowed mobile to become fully integrated into an organization’s business phone system.  With Mobile VOIP there are no longer limitations on our mobile phones such as not being able to display company ID on outbound calls or not being able to perform extension-to-extension dialing.

With  summer just around the corner – and vacation plans plentiful – we wanted to highlight the advantages of a mobile VOIP solution.  Mobile VOIP allows one to stay connected everywhere – even when you are nowhere near your desk phone.

Mobile VoIP Features and Benefits

Specific features one gets with a mobile VOIP solution can vary.  It depends to a large degree on the SIP Client or mobile phone used.  Having said that, however, the following are typical benefits received from a mobile VOIP solution:
Make and receive calls without depleting your mobile minutes
Display your company ID when making outbound calls
Make and receive calls over Wi-Fi and your 3G or 4G Network
Extension-to-extension dialing

As you can tell, mobile VOIP is a great solution for executives and team members who are traveling for business, meeting with clients or even those taking advantage of a nice, summer day.  With mobile VOIP you will no longer be out of the loop to take care of your important business.

How to Save on Your Phone Bill

Posted by admin On August - 5 - 2011

If you don’t have an internet connection, get one.

You’ll need the internet in order to chat online as an alternative means of communication. You’ll need a broadband internet connection to make the most of how to save on your phone bill with the use of MagicJack or Vonage, both VOIP services. That stands for voice over internet protocol – explained here in a subsequent step.

A dial-up phone connection is totally unnecessary if you want to save on your phone bill. Even with the added cost of a broadband connection, you’ll still save money because you won’t need the land-line to connect to the internet. Broadband can be very inexpensive with the available slower speeds.

If it’s available in your area, I recommend Clearwire because of its inexpensive price, its reliability and its versatility – no long, thick cables. Skype, Yahoo, Windows Live Messenger and GoogleTalk all work well with Clearwire or any other broadband connection.

You can use a web cam with most if not all of the various choices of internet chat and phone services. The web cam feature allows you better, more personal communication because you can actually see the other party. Body language says volumes; much better this way than with a telephone. You can even send photos and short videos with your web cam.

All the Instant Messaging services are free downloads. Although computer to computer phone calls are free on all of them, computer to phone calls are not. Check their rates before using their computer to phone calling features.

You’ll need to purchase an inexpensive headset and web cam before you do anything else. Some laptop computers have such high quality audio and video built in, you won’t need to purchase these items.

Many companies offer a vast selection at a very wide range of prices. It’s best to buy these at a retail store or do some serious online shopping. Logitech makes a great product and is sold by Radio Shack and other retailers – even Walmart. No need to invest .95 on any of this. You can purchase a high quality headset as well as a web cam for under each. Some of the online stores are just as good, if not better.

Go online to MagicJack.com or Vonage.com and order their product for savings on land line phone calls.

No monthly bills with MagicJack and very low monthly bills – around – with Vonage. No per minute usage as long as the call is domestic. At last glance, MagicJack cost under for the aparatus and the first year of service. Subsequent years are priced around per year. You probably pay more than that each month for your land-line telephone. Vonage might offer a clearer call for about .00 per month and no initial charge with unlimited free nationwide calling.

Test your setup after installation. Arrange to have a friend download the same internet chat and phone out service provider (Skype, Yahoo, etc.) as well as, if possible, a VOIP service. Place a test call to each other to be sure you have everything configured correctly.

Text-messaging is easy and often free on mobile phone plans. It’s also free to text-message another Yahoo user or a mobile phone anywhere in the world using Yahoo Instant Messenger. Skype is rather expensive at $ .066 per text-message when sending your text-message to a cell phone. Personally, I usually use Yahoo for text-messages and Skype for phone calls or computer to computer – VOIP – calls as well as chats. You might want to set a time and date for your computer to computer, MagicJack or Vonage call with a text message. That way you’ll be sure not to miss any calls. You can also forward these calls to your mobile phone.

When your MagicJack or Vonage device arrives in the mail, do the easy setup and reserve a domestic telephone number. It’s basically plug and play using one of your USB ports. If you run out of USB ports, simply purchase a USB hub. They plug into one USB port and provide something like an extension cord of 2 or more outlets. If you’re running a lot of power from one USB port, you might want to get a USB hub with its own AC power supply. MagicJack uses a lot of power, for example.

Test your MagicJack or Vonage by calling a friend on their land-line and/or cell phone. You’ll be talking over the internet, but it’ll seem just like a normal land-line call.

OK, finished! Now you can share this information with your friends and family, no matter where in the world they may be. Then everyone you know will thank you for showing them how you learned to save on your phone bill. You’ll be the toast of the town :) . Now be sure to read my related article – How to Chat Online.

Advantages of VOIP System

Posted by admin On August - 4 - 2011

For Voice Over IP (VOIP) is a set of software technologies that enable you to establish and manage a communication audio relying not in normal telephone network, but in Internet.

The reason for the growing interest that this technology is leading to is explained by the significant benefits that its adoption can be used to obtain than the traditional telephony:

* Reduction in operating costs;
* Reduction of investment in infrastructure;
* Increased productivity through new features.

The first advantage, reducing operating costs, is significant mainly for calls that do not begin or end, on a normal telephone utilities. If the VOIP call takes place between two computers (PC, PDA or smart phone) connected to the Internet, you avoid any transit through the normal telephone network (PSTN: Public Switched Telephone Network).

Therefore, nothing is due to telephone operators to realize the communication between the parties and, apart from the costs already incurred by either accessing the Internet, the call is totally free.

Another advantage is the significant reduction in investment in infrastructure with the possibility to replace traditional hardware switchboards (PBX) with simple VOIP application software that can provide an equivalent set of functions, if not higher. Applications that implement VOIP PBX features can be significantly cheaper equivalent of their “physical”, rather, there are even free. For example, the complete system VOIPonCD entirely based on Linux and open source applications, installs in minutes on a normal PC and is packaged in a virtual appliance to run under the free virtualization software VMWare.

The third advantage, not least important of savings, is that formed by the versatility of VOIP systems.

Advanced features like call waiting, call to three, call forwarding, audio can be easily provided by the VOIP software. But the most important fact is that it is trivial even enrich them with new features simply by installing additional software modules or performing an upgrade of existing modules.

The operation is rapid, economic, even remotely possible, reversible. But basically this is not the real news, even the call centers had the hardware software upgradeable. The main innovation of VOIP is that it becomes possible, or economically viable, innovative features like the integration of voice mail and e-mail (messages that arrive via email as attachments), the buttons “call” integrated directly into Web pages (part one click and the phone call), the allocation of a virtual number in another country, with redirection via the Internet to the Italy of the incoming calls on that number, and so on: to make this possible is, from an First, the engagement of telephone service in the context information, on the other the particular structure of a typical flat cost of communications via the Internet.

Standard and proprietary technologies
As VOIP technology is important to distinguish between products based on proprietary technologies and products based on standard technologies. All VOIP systems, to support telephone service, must make, in concert with the other, a series of elementary operations that the PSTN network is running normally at each call.

For example: it must be reported to the incoming call, the identity of the caller, must be a way for the called, to accept or reject the call if the call is accepted must be enabled exchange audio flows between the parties in communication with the need to digitize your voice to pass it and then play it on arrival. Finally, both parties must be able to communicate at any time terminate the call.

This set of operations is carried out according to protocols, which prescribe the times, modes, symbols, forms of encoding and compression algorithms to be used at different stages. For example, the transmission of the audio signal of voice compression algorithms require (to allow the operation even when the network connection is not broadband) and cryptographic algorithms (to obstruct the interception and listening to a talk by VOIP unauthorized third). However, it is obvious that the systems of the VOIP calling and called, in order to be compatible, they must use exactly the same compression algorithms and encryption.

It is precisely on the ground of the protocols and algorithms that are different from the standard proprietary. I first choose to use protocols and algorithms specified, published and periodically amended (if necessary) by international bodies, two products of different manufacturers, which do however refer to the same standards should be compatible.

In the case of VOIP, there are two alternative standards for the regulation of the management cycle of calls are the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), defined (Internet Engineering Task Force), and H .323, promulgated by ‘ITU (International Telecommunications Union). Especially in products intended for consumer or small business, the current trend is to an increasing spread of the simplest and most recent SIP. The .323 H remains more common in products for the enterprise market.

The products based on proprietary technologies do not adhere to standards but adopt its own system, usually patented, to handle calls. This means that these systems can communicate (at least directly) only with systems of the same type: the user is in fact “prisoner” of proprietary technology, which also becomes an effective barrier to entry for potential competitors.

The choice to adopt proprietary technologies are more acceptable in software (often referred to as the soft phone), especially if these products are offered for free, even if tied to a proprietary standard, the user retains the ability to “escape” at any time simply by adopting a another free program. Would be very different if the capital impact the systems had to change hardware. For this reason, the physical cost of VOIP is not always negligible, or based on standard SIP, H.323, or what. VOIP hardware also presented as “for Skype” in most cases, is nothing but a USB audio device equipped with telephone keypad, and the integration with Skype is just the management software.
