The speed of the internet connection between the router and your provider (i.e. the internet) is the limiting factor. This is usually anything from 2Mbps to 10Mbps depending on your package. The nearest to that will be Virgin when they offer 50 Mb and that wont be for another 18 months or so. See there were 10mbps network gear that was widely used in the 80's and early 90s until the 100mps side was phased in. Here recently, we have 1000mbps.
