Skypeln or the Online phone number is possibly Skype’s most innovative product. Some 400 million of us use the service from time to time. Nearly everyone knows about free peer to peer calls, but the Online number is a relatively unknown feature that’s just beginning catch on.
An Online number is identical to all other phone numbers, except that it doesn’t require the owner to pay a line rental. It’s a virtual or online phone number. Anyone can call a Skype phone number from a regular landline or cell phone. They allow non-Skype users to contact people using the service and they can make the calls using regular telephone handsets.
Our main number is Skype number. We no longer have an account with the local phone company, which saves us a bundle every year. But there are other benefits:
1) We can be contacted when we are overseas by friends, family … for the cost of a local phone call.
2) The service can be used as a cheap 1-800 number to encourage overseas customers to call us when they want to discuss business.
3) We can re-direct calls or record phone messages when we are unavailable.
4) Calls can be picked up not only from desktop and laptop PCs, but also handheld devices: iPhones, cell phones, smartphones, wireless phones …
5) It’s a perfect companion to our RingCentral online fax number, which enables us to send and receive faxes without a fax machine or dedicated fax line.
Online phone numbers and fax numbers are progressively taking over from copper wires. Before too long we can see that all calls will be either free or charged as local calls.
