Gigabit

ericcoz asked:

Assuming that I am using Cat 5e and gigabit NICs, if I plug a gigabit switch into a 100 megabit router, the segment attached to the switch will operate at gigabit speed, correct?

  1. Colinc says:

The switch will change to 100M on the router port. The rest of the system will work at Gig.

Which segment attached to the switch?

Any piece of cable that has a 1Gb adapter at both ends will run at 1Gb speed. Any piece of cable that has a 1Gb adapter at one end and a 100Mb adapter at the other end must autoconfigure or must manually configure to 100Mb maximum speed or it won’t work.

So if your PCs have Gb NICs in, most of your LAN will run at Gb speed, but the link to the router will run at 100Mb speed.

You are correct, with the exception of anything that needs to use the router.
